Regula Portraits

Community leaders in the Tete Province of Mozambique are rewarded with new bicycles in recognition of their efforts to improve the sanitary conditions in their communities and to achieve the status of ‘Open Defecation Free (ODF)’ for their villages. The traditional community leaders are referred to as the Regula.

The army-style uniforms, the poses and choice of prize are reminiscent of the colonial era, however these images were taken in 2010 at Changara village at a sombre ceremony, officiated by Mozambique’s Minister of Health.
